The Open Road Bookshop was launched by Dave Charleston in September 2011. Standing at the crossroads in Stoke – by – Nayland, Suffolk, it is a small second hand bookshop offering a range of carefully selected volumes, at competitive prices, specialising in English and American Literature. There are also shelves on nature, travel, music, art and sport as well as biography and some miscellaneous non-fiction. Books by local authors are also featured.
Work by local artists is also exhibited and for sale as are cards from some of East Anglia’s best illustrators.
Evening events are held at the bookshop and include book launches and readings as well as musical performances.

Dear Open Road – what a wonderful enterprise! I’m so looking forward to visiting your shop – it looks absolutely delightful and confirms the impression given by the Spectator review of some weeks ago. I particularly enjoyed the photo gallery on this site – who is that beautiful dark-haired maiden with a glass of wine outside the shop on launch day??

Mark Eitzel has imagined his perfect bookshop in American Music Club’s “Myopic Books”. In Eitzel’s bookshop “the music they’d play there would be Dinosaur Jr. / And the people who worked there would be super-skinny / And super-unfriendly”. In The Open Road we now have a real bookshop that is near-perfect.* In contrast to Eitzel’s masochistic fantasy, the person who works there is super-friendly and aesthetically proportioned, yet I am sure he would play DInosour Jr on request. If I were a musician I would write a song about The Open Road, if I were a writer I would compose a poem. Being neither, I am content to spend time browsing and spending.
*perfection would have been achieved had the proprietor purchased my Gore VIdal hardbacks. He claimed there was “no demand”, nonsense!
